Vedic
astrology is intimately concerned with the moment of commencement: the
commencement of life, the commencement of an event, the commencement of
a venture, the commencement of a journey, the commencement of a year of
life, and the like, It is the moment of commencement with which is
inseparably associated the destiny of a given event. The planetary
disposition at the time of beginning of an event is represented in the
form of a horoscopes chart which is then subjected to astrological
analysis in order to decipher the destiny of that event.
Timing of
events in Vedic astrology is done by the use of dashas (or operational
periods of planets) and Gochara (or the transit of planets). Both need
to be integrated carefully in order to make correct predictions. Of the
numerous dasha systems available, it is the Vimshottari dasha that is
the most commonly employed by practitioners of astrology. Here,
different planets have their Mahadasha (MD) or major periods, and each
MD has the Antardashas (AD) or sub-periods of all planets, operating
during the main span of the MD. There are further sub-divisions too but
we shall stick to the MD and AD only, for the purpose of the subject.
As we have
mentioned above, the moment of the beginning of anything is significant.
It is surprising, therefore, that not much attentions has been paid to
the moment of the beginning of a dasha. Sages have highly recommended
that the planetary disposition at the commencement of a dasha (MD or AD)
has a significant role in determining the outcome of a dashas. Of
particular importance in the connection is the disposition of the dasha
lord. Dr. Charka then explains the method of calculation of dashas
marimba and analysis of the chart with the help of example charts.
In addition to the individual characteristics
listed on these pages, the signs of the zodiac are classified in three other
ways. Each is either positive "masculine", spontaneous and self-expressive) or
negative "feminine" (withdrawn and passive).; each is assigned one of the four
principle elements of fire (Fire is lively and aggressive), air (Air is lively
in mind and fluent in expression), earth (Earth is matter-of-fact and
controlled), and water (Water is sensitive and intuitive). These are known as
the triplices. Fire, air, earth and water. Triplicity ? there are four not three?
"Triplicity" meaning triplicate or three, because there are three zodiac signs
for each element. Each sign is either cardinal, fixed or mutable (the
quadruples because there are four zodiac signs to each one). The qualities of
cardinal, fixed and mutable are respectively, initiative cardinal),
steadfastness fixed), and changeableness/adaptability mutable). Can you see a
connection? steadfast is fixed and changeableness is "mutable"? Most all things
in astrology form "logical" connections. |
